What to Eat the First Week with Braces

Updated: Sep 13, 2023

The thought of getting braces can make anyone a bit nervous. But, with a little preparation, you can have a very smooth experience! One of the easiest ways to prepare for getting braces is to make sure the fridge and pantry are stocked with the right kids of foods ahead of time.

The bonding materials used to secure braces takes a few days to fully strengthen. While your braces are becoming more set and secured, it is important to stick to a soft diet. Below are some great ideas of approved foods safe to eat after having braces placed to help support a smooth first few days!

20 Braces-Friendly Foods for the First Few Days:

• Apple sauce

• Yogurt

• Smoothies

• Soups (cooled off)

• Eggs

• Pancakes

• Cottage cheese

• Jell-O

• Soft fruits (like bananas, watermelon)

• Mashed potatoes (cooled off)

• Fish

• Soft pasta noodles

• Oatmeal

• Avocado

• Popsicles

• Ice cream

• Pudding

• Canned, soft vegetables

• Beans

• Soft cheeses

Additional Pro Tips

Make sure to drink lots of water to stay hydrated! This helps prevent cheeks and lips from sticking to your brackets and creating sores. In addition, you'll want to avoid hot foods and drinks, as heated temperature can affect the bonding materials used to secure braces the first few days. Smoking should also be avoided. Remember to always be sure to follow your orthodontist’s post-op instructions to avoid broken brackets and appliances.
